Patient Waiting Patiently

Waiting Room at Dermatology

“I have died every day waiting for you” plays on the overhead music– seriously!

“One step closer ” it continues — the insurance card has been processed

I sit in my awkward position facing the receptionist directly

“You didn’t have to cut me out” next song on the playlist — is that the skin cancer song?

“You’re just somebody that I used to know”

All the patients could be my grandparent

“We were sad of getting old. It made us restless”. Really? Was it the pandora dermatology station??

There’s a medicinal odor and a lot of stark whiteness

A tiny rubber tree plant and a giant bent ficus in an otherwise scantly decorated area

“You don’t have to try” come the lyrics

I’m all alone in the waiting room — everyone has been called back for now.

“Everybody here is watching you” say the lyrics

I get called back. Nurse takes a photo — I am not kidding you– lyrics:

“You look like a movie

You sound like a song

My God, this reminds me

Of when we were young

Let me photograph you in this light

In case it is the last time

That we might be exactly like we were

Before we realized

We were sad of getting old

It made us restless

It was just like a movie

It was just like a song”

Let’s freeze this little pre-cancer …

Lyrics continue– “I was so scared to face my fears”

Overall skin check is good. Freeze off a couple spots.

See ya next year.
